Nicholas Lou Saban Jr. graduated from Monongah High School in the small community of Monongah, West Virginia. He played quarterback on the 1968 West Virginia state championship team.

In 1973, Saban graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in business. In 1975, Saban earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Kent State University.

Saban was first hired as a graduate assistant at Kent State University. He later served as an assistant coach in several NCAA Division I-A schools: Syracuse in 1977, West Virginia in 1978 and 1979, Ohio State in 1980 and 1981, Navy in 1982, and Michigan State from 1983 to 1987.

In 1988, Saban was hired as an assistant coach for the Houston Oilers in the National Football League.

On December 22, 1989, the University of Toledo hired as a head coach for the first time in his career Saban. Under Saban, Toledo was co-champion of the Mid-American Conference in 1990.

After just one season with the Toledo, Saban became the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns under head coach Bill Belichick. He remained in that position for four seasons.

In 1995, Saban became head coach of Michigan State University. Under Saban, Michigan State went to bowl games in each of his first three seasons.

In 1999, Saban became the 31st football head coach of Louisiana State University. LSU enjoyed major success under Saban. In 2004, Saban became the head coach of the NFL team, Miami Dolphins.

In 2007, Saban became the 27th head coach of the University of Alabama. Under the able coaching of Saban, Alabama achieved several accolades. Subsequently, on June 7, 2021, Saban agreed to a contract extension with Alabama. The deal runs through the 2028 season.
