Niels Wittich Career

Niels Wittich is the FIA Formula One Race Director, who assumed his current role in 2022 after the departure of Michael Masi. Besides being the race director, Wittich is also a Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department.

Wittich is responsible for managing the logistics of each F1 Grand Prix, inspecting cars before a race, enforcing rules and controlling the lights that start each race. Before being appointed the FIA F1 race director, Wittich previously held the position of race director for the DTM series.

Since his appointment as race director, Wittich has amended a number of sections in the F1 rulebook. He has been very strict about the behaviour of drivers and teams on the racing circuit.

One of his notable actions in a brief stint so far is his strong stance on drivers wearing jewellery during an F1 race. The FIA led by Wittich made sure that all drivers including top shots like Hamilton complied with the rules before taking the track for a race by removing pieces of jewellery, ornaments or piercings from their bodies.

Wittich has vast experience in serving multiple levels of motorsport in top roles. He has previously been the race director for the FIA F2 and F3 championships, besides assisting the F1 race director at select events. The German has served as a race director and a circuit inspector for more than 20 years as an FIA official.

In 2024, Niels Wittich has stepped down as F1 race director and he was replaced by Rui Marques for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Wittich resigned the job to focus on his future and spend time with family.
