Nikola Mektić started playing tennis at the age of 6. Mektic started playing tennis after his brother took up the sport. After playing as a junior for a considerable time, Mektic finally turned pro in 2006.
Mektic then spent a better part of a decade on the ATP challenger tour and even achieved a career-high ranking of No. 213 in singles on May 6, 2013. Then in 2016, Mektic decided to focus on doubles.
In the same year of 2016, Mektic reached his first ATP men’s doubles final as a wildcard at the 2016 Croatia Open Umag with his partner Antonio Šančić. Ever since then, there is no looking back for Mektic.
Till now, Mektic has won eighteen ATP men’s doubles titles, including one doubles Grand Slam title, six Masters 1000 titles, one mixed doubles Grand Slam and the 2020 ATP Finals.
In 2018, Mektic and Alexander Peya qualified for the 2018 ATP Finals in London. In the same year, Mektic reached his first Grand Slam finals (in mixed doubles) at the 2018 US Open, with partner Alicja Rosolska. He also won the Davis Cup playing for Croatia.

In 2021, Mektic partnered with fellow Croatian Mate Pavić. Mektic and Pavic won four ATP titles including the doubles title at the 2021 Miami Open. The duo also reached the 2021 Australian Open doubles semifinals and 2021 Dubai Tennis Championships final. The results subsequently helped Mektic to return to his then-world No. 4 high-career ranking on April 5, 2021.
Mektic next won his fifth ATP Masters 1000 in a row and second Masters title of the year at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Mektic then reached the final at the 2021 Mutua Madrid Open Masters. Sadly, Mektic and Pavic lost the finals. Subsequently, Mektic and Pavic went on to win the Italian Open. After the Italian Open win, Mektic moved to his then career-high ranking of World No. 2 on 17 May 2021.
Further, Mektic and Pavic made history by winning the doubles event at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The pair became the first Croatian players to win the Wimbledon men’s doubles title.
Next, at the Tokyo Olympics, Mektic and Pavic won the gold medal. It was Croatia’s first gold medal in tennis.
On 18 October 2021, Mektic and Pavic played the quarterfinal at the 2021 BNP Paribas Open. After the tournament, Mektić became World No. 1 in doubles. He is only the second Croatian tennis player in history to be ranked No.1 in the world in doubles.
In 2022, Mektic and Pavic won their second Italian Open Masters crown, thus defending their 2021 title.
