Norwich City Opinion: Why the Canaries should go all out for Gary Medel?

According to a report from Turkish outlet Totemle, newly-promoted Premier League outfit Norwich City have joined West Ham in the race to sign Besiktas star, Gary Medel.

The Chilean, 31, joined Besiktas from Inter Milan in 2017 and has been an ever-present figure at the Turkish outfit. He managed 24 appearances this past season, as Besiktas finished third in the Super Lig table.

Interest has not just come from the Premier League clubs, however. The report claims that Boca Juniors are also keen in bringing Gary Medel to Argentina this summer.

It will be tough for Norwich City to persuade Medel to sign for them, considering interest from clubs like West Ham and Boca Juniors. But they must do everything possible to sign the stocky Chilean, as Daniel Farke aims to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The Canaries won promotion from the Championship in style under Daniel Farke, securing the title on the final day. They have already hit the ground running in the summer transfer window having completed the signing of Patrick Roberts from Manchester City on a season-long loan deal. Farke needs to ensure he gets his summer transfer business completed early due to massive competition in the market.

Following Patrick Roberts’ acquisition, the Norwich boss would be keen to add some much-needed experience to his squad. It’s the midfield and the attack the Canaries lack top-flight experience and Farke would be wise to bring in someone like Gary Medel.

Medel has just one year left on his deal with Besiktas, which means he’s likely to be available on a cut-price deal this summer. The 31-year-old has had a previous stint in the Premier League with Cardiff City, although the Bluebirds were relegated at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

Standing at just 5ft 7in, the Chile international is a tough-tackling, solid and robust player, who is equally adept at playing as a defensive midfielder or central defender. He is a composed passer and distributor of the ball, clever reader of the game and a vocal leader. Medel has also invaluable European experience, having played for the likes of Sevilla, Inter Milan and Besiktas.

The stocky 31-year-old would provide cover in midfield as well as defence for Farke, whose primary aim will be survival in the first season back at the top-flight. The Canaries need more depth if they want to do well next season and signings like Medel could be ideal.

Verdict

Although the vastly experienced Chilean international isn’t at his peak anymore, he can still offer a lot to at the top level for another couple of seasons. Hence, Medel could be a very good signing for Norwich.
