According to the L’Equipe, Premier League newcomers Norwich City are interested in signing FC Lorient starlet Alexis Claude Maurice. (h/t France Football)
Alexis Claude Maurice, 20, has established himself as one of Ligue 2’s hottest properties with 14 goals and three assists. The report claims that Norwich City will have to pay around €10m for the young forward, who has also caught the eye of Lille, Real Sociedad and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Daniel Farke’s Norwich City cruised to the Championship title and will be playing in the Premier League next season. The Norfolk club punched above their weight and achieved promotion when a mid-table finish in the 2018/19 Championship season was expected.
Massive credit to Farke for assembling a squad of relatively unknown gems to help Norwich get over the line. One of those was Teemu Pukki, who was a revelation in the second-tier of English football. The Finn joined the Canaries from Brondby last summer and made a telling impact at the club.
Now, with the club returning to the top flight, Farke has to be clever in his summer dealings to give his team a chance of survival in the Premier League. The club needs to add quality in every area of the pitch if they are to do well in the 2019/20 season. They must look to bring the right profile of players and Alexis Claude Maurice certainly fits the billing at the Carrow Road.
Maurice has impressed in the second-tier of French football. The France U20 international, who can operate on either flank or in the number 10 role, will undoubtedly boost Norwich’s attacking ranks. He will add quality and depth to the squad as well as bring competition for Pukki, who has scored goals left, right and centre in the Championship.
With 14 goals and three assists, Maurice can also be a lethal option to have from the bench for any manager. The young Frenchman possesses a terrific shot with both feet, with which he can deliver dangerous crosses into the box and dribble past defenders in the wide areas with ease. He has good pace to trouble any defence, by making runs in behind.
While Pukki has been excellent in the Championship, there are no guarantees he will cut it in the top-flight. Thus, Farke will need better options and a strong squad if the Canaries are to stay in the Premier League.
