Liverpool Opinion: Memphis Depay signing must be Liverpool’s priority
According to a recently published report by Daily Mail, Lyon’s Dutch forward star Memphis Depay is said to have piqued the interest of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The Reds are looking at the possibility of bringing the talented winger to Anfield during the upcoming summer transfer window.
It is claimed that he is being eyed as a possible replacement for Sadio Mane, who has been quite strongly linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid. A host of Premier League clubs are said to be interested in Depay but Liverpool
It is also claimed that Depay now believes that he’s ready to make the step up to Premier League football again having heavily impressed for Lyon and for the Netherlands national team this season, even being utilised as the central striking option on certain occasions.
Born in Moordrecht, the 25-year-old Dutch international is a product of the famous PSV academy. He joined them after spending his youth career at local club FC Moordrecht and then at the Sparta Rotterdam youth division.
Since joining the Dutch side though, his development as a player was quite rapid and within a few years after joining the club, he was already making headlines. He was just 12 when he made the switch to PSV and it took him till 2011 to finally find a place for himself in their first team.
After impressing heavily in the Eredivisie early on during his career, he was scouted as a world-class talent and signed up by Premier League giants Manchester United as they looked to strengthen their bid for the English league title while they were still settling to life without Sir Alex Ferguson running things.
Within a few weeks after the trickster’s switch though, it became clear that he had made the move up too early and that a league as physical as the Premier League was going to take it’s toll on him. His spell in England wasn’t a successful one by any standard and that’s probably why he looking to make up for lost time.
Depay scored just 7 goals and assisted 6 in his 53 professional appearances within a little over a year for Manchester United but his performances weren’t what you’d call top quality. He seemed to lack pace and imagination every time he pulled on the famous red shit – the same attributes that he’s best known.
Unbelievably sharp on the ball, his movements on the flanks have been impeccable all campaign and this has helped him notch up 6 goals and 8 assists in 28 Ligue 1 games. His finishing has drastically improved too and this has seen him utilised in the striker’s role too.
