Novak Djokovic creates unbelievable stats in the US Open as he continues to dominate the tennis world
Novak Djokovic, the World No.1 has shown this year why he is most likely to create new records and end up as the Greatest of All time. The Serbian, 34, has won the first 3 Grand Slams of the year and is on the cusp of a Golden Slam, previously achieved by Steffi Graf.
He is tied with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at 20 Grand Slams, but could overtake them next month at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Djokovic began his career after the likes of Federer and Nadal. He made his US Open debut at Flushing Meadows in 2005 and is one of his most favourite venues in the world. The Serb was defeated after an outstanding third round match with the more experienced Fernando Verdasco. He lost 6-1, 4-6, 6-72, 6-4, 6-4.
This was also his highest finish in his first year at the Grand Slams, which inspired him to go further in the coming years.
He won his first US Open in 2011, where he beat his adversary and bitter rival Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. The 2011 season was one of the most dominant as the Serb won his first title in New York, his third Grand Slam championship of the year and his fourth major overall.
“…I didn’t give him (Nadal) any comfort. I didn’t give him any room.”
The Grand Slam has been won only 3 times by the Serb, which is lowest tally in the 20.
His career record stands at 930-189. He was won 81 career singles titles and is the favourite to surpass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. This success has given him $145,147,979 USD in career earnings.
He has been world No. 1 for a record 331 weeks. Djokovic is one of eight male players to achieve the Career Grand Slam and one of three to achieve the Double Career Grand Slam. Djokovic went on a 43-match win streak and set a then record of 5 Masters titles won in the 2011 season.
Djokovic holds the records of 15 straight finals in a single season, a streak of 11 Masters finals and 18 straight top-tier tournament finals. Djokovic has won 36 titles in the ATP Masters tournaments. He holds the record for ATP ranking points at 16,950 points. Djokovic is the only player to defeat Federer and Nadal in all four Grand Slams.
