“If he stays healthy” – Novak Djokovic’s mother believes her son can break Roger Federer’s Grand Slam record

Novak Djokovic has 17 Grand Slams to his name while Roger Federer has a record 20

Novak Djokovic picked up his eighth Australian Open recently with a great display against Dominic Thiem and he beat Roger Federer in the semis too.

This was also his 17th Grand Slam and the Serbian is now only three behind Federer. The Swiss ace holds the record for most Slams in the history of the men’s game, and Djokovic should give him a run for the money.

Djokovic is just 32 and is still playing quality tennis. Federer has had his injury troubles in the past and age is catching up to him.

Rafael Nadal, on the other hand, has 19 Slams to his name, but the Spaniard also has had injury problems in the past.

Djokovic might need a couple of years to break Federer’s record but his mother, Dijana, believed her son could get this milestone:

“I mean, there really is a record to break, if he stays healthy and continue playing like this, everything will be great.”

The Djoker’s mother was speaking on a range of topics with Sport Klub Tenis and claimed her son had a lot of qualities which has led to him winning titles:

“If you don’t have passion and motivation, then there is no success, and he has a lot of both.”

Dijana also claimed she was proud of one record her son held which Federer and Nadal didn’t. Djokovic is the only one to hold all four Slams at the same time, a feat he achieved in 2015-16.

What’s next for Djokovic?

The Serbian came back from two sets to one down against Thiem to win the Australian Open.

The next Grand Slam is the French Open and Nadal has to be a favourite for this. It might be difficult for Federer to win this slam given that this will be his only clay-court event of the year.

We could see another final between Djokovic and Nadal, but the Serb has to be wary of the threat possessed by some of the other stars.

Djokovic has won just one French Open in his career, and it will be interesting to see how he does at Roland Garros.
