The NXT vs AEW ratings war was hit hard this week with both shows recording lows
NXT and AEW brought out their New Year’s clashes with stacked cards on both shows.
AEW had their top titles being defended on the show and even had some other big names on the show.
Snoop Dogg was present to help out the ratings and even got involved in a clash. This was also the first AEW Dynamite after the excellent Brodie Lee tribute and also saw the formation of the Bullet Club after the main event.
WWE, on the other hand, brought out New Year’s Evil on NXT. This also had most of the top titles being defended and also featured a couple of high octane clashes.
Rhea Ripley vs Raquel Gonzalez met in a Last Woman Standing match and that brought the roof down. Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly continued their brawl for the NXT title, and both were sent to the hospital after the clash.
Hikaru Shida, on AEW, was bitten by Abadon but she kept the title. In fact, there weren’t any title changes despite so much action and drama.
However, the packed cards didn’t help AEW or NXT in the viewership numbers. This could have been due to the riots at Capitol Hill but the numbers weren’t great.
NXT vs AEW ratings
Last week’s special Brodie Lee tribute from AEW brought in an incredible 977,000 viewers. However, this week it was down to 662,000, which was a reduction by 32% (h/t Forbes).
Things were only slightly better on NXT. Despite the huge card they racked in just over 641,000 viewers. However, this was better than the previous week where they got 586,000 viewers. NXT still lost this week’s ratings and viewership war to AEW but they made a gain in the grand scheme of things.
It will be interesting to see how things take place next week with AEW still continuing their New Year’s Smash night two.
