Why Celtic must offload Marvin Compper as soon as possible

Marvin Compper joined Celtic earlier in January and the experienced centre-back seemed like a good choice to shore up the Bhoys’ backline. However, fast forward to September and things haven’t been great for the 33-year-old.

Celtic have enjoyed a lot of success under Brendan Rodgers but amidst all the trophies and whatnot, Compper has failed to make a significant impact at Parkhead. And perhaps it is time for him to pull the plug on his career in Scotland.

To be fair, there were plenty of warning signs which Celtic seemingly ignored before signing Compper. For all his experience, the player had only played 91 minutes for his former club RB Leipzig in the first half of last season.

In fact, he often failed to make their matchday squad and while the German outfit are a strong side, Rodgers should have looked elsewhere instead of signing Compper. Incidentally, the defender is also yet to make a single appearance for the Bhoys in the Premiership.

Celtic could not have provided him game time even if they wanted to. A mix of injuries and poor form has severely halted his career.

Hence, the Parkhead bosses must cut their losses and offload him preferably once the winter window commences. He still has two years remaining on his current contract but retaining him beyond January would make absolutely no sense for the Scottish giants.

One might argue that he must be given some time to revive his Celtic career but his chances of doing so are rather unlikely. Rodgers signed Filip Benkovic on loan whereas Dedryck Boyata is also on Celtic’s books.

Meanwhile, he also has the likes of Jack Hendry, Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic as options. And if needed, midfielder Nir Bitton can be utilized as a centre-back.

With so many options at hand, Compper is hopelessly down the pecking order and his potential exit would be best for all parties involved. Given his experience and skills, he could work wonders for a different club – and maybe even in a different league. But from the evidence at our disposal, it does look like the player is just wasting time at Celtic.
