Dustin Poirier picked up his second UFC loss as he faced Cub Swanson at UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs McDonald

Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier has been around for a long time and he is one of the greatest Featherweights in UFC history.

The Diamond has faced off against some of the best too with wins over Conor McGregor, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Eddie Alvarez, to name a few.

However, for all the great wins Poirier has had in his career, there have been a few losses too. Poirier only has six losses (As of February 2021) and one no contest. While the loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor are brought up a lot since they were big matches, there is another one that deserves some attention.

This was early on in his UFC career and Poirier was looking to get a streak going. He had beaten Holloway with an impressive submission at UFC 143 but then lost to Chan Sung Jung, The Korean Zombie, in his next fight.

That took his record to 12-2 and Poirier got back to winning ways against Jonathan Brookins. However, he was to get another big loss to a UFC icon in his next out.

Poirier wasn’t the original opponent for Cub Swanson, who has been with the UFC for a long time. Dennis Siver was to face Swanson but pulled out with The Diamond filling in.

This was Poirier’s first fight since defeating Brookins in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 16 and he took up the clash within 63 days.

Poirier impressed in the clash and even had some great takedowns. The Diamond also used some of his patented leg kicks but Swanson also got some big hits in.

In fact, both stars rocked their rivals with some big shots but the fight went on for all three rounds. The co-main event certainly lived up the expectations but the win went Swanson’s way.

Swanson got the unanimous decision win under his belt but this seemed to fire up Poirier.

The Diamond went on a three-fight win streak before he faced McGregor for the first time at UFC 178. That fight also ended in a loss for Poirier but he then went on another streak that took his closer to the Lightweight title.
