Serena Williams has been an inspiration to millions. Her achievements are unparallel and will be etched in our memories forever.
The 40-year-old Serena Williams lost in the third round of the ongoing US Open competition against an upbeat Ajla Tomljanovic 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6. This match in all likelihood was the last time we saw the 23-time Grand Slam champion in action as she announced her plans regarding retirement prior to the tournament.
The tennis world is saluting the unbelievable career of Williams, as she has dominated women’s tennis for decades since turning pro in October 1995.
A woman named Rhiannon Potkey shared a childhood picture of herself on Twitter where she is seen standing alongside a young Serena Williams. The two girls are holding trophies in their hands. Potkey wrote in the caption how disappointed she was after losing to the future World No. 1. However, her coach told her to keep the photo and predicted that Williams will become a multiple-time Grand Slam winner in the future. The prediction couldn’t have been more accurate. She wrote:
“I was pretty disappointed after this loss. But my coach told me to save this photo because “one day that girl will win a lot of Grand Slams.”
I am glad I listened. Thank you #Serena for a lifetime of inspiration. 🐐”
Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles in singles competitions. She also won 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles competitions and 2 titles in mixed doubles competitions.
