Novak Djokovic won his fifth Wimbledon title last year overcoming Roger Federer in an epic-five set thriller

Novak Djokovic achieved a remarkable feat last year at the Wimbledon when he beat Roger Federer in the longest final ever played at the tournament.

Not only did Djokovic defend his Wimbledon title, but the match against Federer proved to be an epic five-set thriller that lasted four hours and fifty-seven minutes.

A big achievement indeed by the Serbian, however, his mother Dijana Djokovic, recalls how tough the match was for her son.

Djokovic’s mother was talking about how Novak handled pressure during games with sports channel Sport Klub Tenis, when she suddenly recalled the epic clash against Federer in 2019.

“I remember this Wimbledon, the day before Wimbledon finals, we were at their house, Srdjan and I. So, Novak is there, he is present, but he isn’t here, physically he is there, but mentally he isn’t,” Dijana was heard saying.

“He is constantly absent in his thoughts. He plays with the kids, but somehow, he isn’t there. The same thing in the morning. The point is, he was mentally preparing for the match against Federer for two days,” she recalled.

“That is my opinion, I was there, I watched him…. And it was perhaps one of the hardest matches I have watched in his career,” Dijana concluded.

Djokovic’s dad blasts Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic’s dad Srdjan Djokovic blasted Roger Federer, calling him “jealous” while speaking to Serbian newspaper Novosti.

Federer, 38, currently has the highest number of Grand Slams – 20, to his name while Djokovic has 17 and is three titles behind the Swiss maestro.

Also, Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who trails Federer by just one Grand Slam are mostly given a warm reception by tennis fans than Djokovic.

This was even more evident in the Australian Open which concluded earlier this year. However, Djokovic’s dad has other opinions about Federer, especially about his off-court behaviour.

“Federer has been jealous of Novak from the moment he made his breakthrough because he knew that my son was better than him and that he would tower over him. Federer is an outstanding tennis player, but I couldn’t say that about his humanity,” Srdjan opined.
