One man holds a unique distinction in motorsports history as the only driver to have defeated both Dale Earnhardt and Ayrton Senna in head-to-head competition on the racetrack. With even his name suggesting ‘race’, it is none other than the now-78-year-old Lake Speed.
Lake Speed’s famous victory in 1978
Born on the 17th of January, 1948, Speed achieved his most famous victory in 1978 when he won the Karting World Championship, defeating a field that included future Formula One legend, the late Ayrton Senna. Speed was the only American among approximately 100 entrants in the prestigious competition and remained the only man from USA to have won the championship until 2015, before a 14-year-old Logan Sargeant won it.
Speed’s karting credentials were exceptional. He captured the International Karting Federation (IKF) National Championship six times during his career, establishing himself as America’s premier kart racer before transitioning to stock cars.

NASCAR Career and battles with the legendary Dale Earnhardt
Speed moved to NASCAR in 1980 and competed in the Winston Cup Series for over a decade. During his 402-race NASCAR career, he scored one victory and regularly battled against Dale Earnhardt, who won 76 Cup Series races and seven championships during their overlapping careers.
While Earnhardt dominated NASCAR with his aggressive driving style and multiple championships, Speed proved he could compete with “The Intimidator” on numerous occasions throughout their shared time on the Cup Series circuit.
While both Earnhardt and Senna are considered among the greatest drivers of all time in their respective disciplines, Speed stands alone as the only competitor to have defeated both legends in actual competition. Speed’s karting triumph came early in Senna’s career, before the Brazilian’s rise to Formula One immortality, while his NASCAR battles with Earnhardt occurred during the height of stock car racing’s popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s.
