Ons Jabeur Career

Ons Jabeur was introduced to tennis at the age of three by her mother. Since then, there is no looking back for Jabeur. After playing junior tennis for quite some time, Jabeur finally became a professional in 2010.

While playing junior tennis, Jabeur reached two junior major girls’ singles finals at the French Open in 2010 and 2011. Notably, Jabeur won the 2011 Junior French Open. The Junior French Open title helped Jabeur rise to world No. 4 in the junior rankings.

On the other hand, Jabeur started playing on the ITF Women’s Circuit in 2008 at the age of 14. Jabeur won her first title at the $10K level in singles in May 2010 in Antalya, Turkey. After two months, she won the singles and doubles events at another $10K tournament in Casablanca, Morocco.

In February 2012, Jabeur made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at the age of 17 as a wildcard at the Premier 5 Qatar Open. She also played at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she didn’t qualify. Also, Jabeur couldn’t find much success at the ITF Circuit in 2012.

In 2013, Jabeur won her first $25K title in April 2013 in Tunis. She then won back-to-back $50K titles in Japan in May. In July 2013, Jabeur played in her second WTA tournament at the Baku Cup. Sadly, Jabeur lost in the quarterfinals.

Next, Jabeur won her third $50K title at the Challenger de Saguenay. This win took her to a new career-high of world no. 139. After 2013, for the next three years, Jabeur stayed inside the top 200. She managed to reach a career-best ranking of 118 in 2015.

In 2014, Jabeur won her only ITF title at a $25K event in Tunis. In 2015, Jabeur didn’t win any titles. Then, in January 2016, Jabeur made a comeback by winning two $25K titles. Subsequently, Jabeur won a $50K title at the Nana Trophy in Tunis. Ultimately, she finished 2016 at World No. 193.

In 2017, Jabeur participated in all four Grand Slam singles events for the first time. However, she couldn’t perform well in the Grand Slam events. Next, after the Premier-level Dubai Tennis Championships, Jabeur began to rise back up the rankings. Her Dubai Tennis Championships results brought her from No. 171 to No. 137.

Notably, after the 2017 French Open third-round exit, Jabeur made her top-100 debut. Then after a few unsuccessful runs, Jabeur fell out of the top 100 in February 2018. Subsequently, Jabeur did not win her first match of the year 2018 until she reached the quarterfinals at the $60K Space Coast Pro Classic in April.

Further, Jabeur won her first $100K title at the Manchester Trophy. After the Manchester win, Jabeur earned a wildcard into the main draw at Wimbledon. In Wimbledon, Jabeur won her only Grand Slam main-draw match of the year against Viktorija Golubic. She next finished runner-up at the Premier-level Kremlin Cup. The Kremlin Cup result helped Jabeur reach a then-career-high of No. 62 in the world.

In 2019, Jabeur achieved moderate success. Jabeur played all four Grand Slam main draws for the first time in 2019, and managed to stay in the top 100 the entire year. However, she reached the semifinals at the Premier-level Eastbourne International.

Jabeur next reached the third round of the US Open. This was the second time Jabeur reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament in her career. Sadly, in the third round Jabeur lost against Karolína Plíšková. However, Jabeur’s US Open result helped her reach a then career-high ranking of No. 51. Next, Jabeur reached her second semifinal of the year 2019 in October at the Tianjin Open.

In 2020, Jabeur made history at the 2020 Australian Open by reaching the quarterfinals. Sadly, in the quarterfinals she lost against Sofia Kenin. However, Jabeur’s Australian Open result helped her make her top-50 debut. She also became the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Jabeur also reached the quarterfinals at the 2020 Qatar Open. Further, Jabeur finished 2020 as world No. 31, her then-career-high ranking.

In 2021, Jabeur reached the final of the WTA 250 MUSC Health Open but sadly lost the final against Astra Sharma. Nevertheless, her results helped her reach a then career-high ranking of world No. 24 on 10 May 2021. In the 2021 French Open, Jabeur reached the fourth round but lost in the fourth round against Coco Gauff.

Furthermore, Jabeur reached her third final in her career and won the WTA Tour title at the Birmingham Classic. By winning the Birmingham Classic, Jabeur made history as the first Arab woman to win a WTA Tour title. In the same Birmingham Classic, Jabeur partnered with Ellen Perez and reached her first doubles final. Sadly, she lost the final to Marie Bouzková and Lucie Hradecká.

In the 2021 Wimbledon, Jabeur reached the quarterfinals. By doing so, Jabeur created history by becoming the first Tunisian tennis player and first Arab woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Unfortunately, she lost the quarterfinals against Aryna Sabalenka. However, her Wimbledon results helped Jabeur reach a then career-high ranking of world No. 22 on 26 July 2021.

Next, Jabeur reached the finals of the 2022 Italian Open. She lost the final to Iga Świątek. However, by reaching the finals, Jabeur reached a then career-high ranking of world No. 6 on 16 May 2022.

After the 2022 French Open, Jabeur reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4 on 6 June 2022.
