Wolves Match Report: Wolves 2-1 Manchester United

Wolves pulled off yet another upset and defied the odds to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Molineux in the Premier League on Tuesday night just a week after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had knocked the Red Devils out of the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

Having suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, the onus was on Wolves to get back to winning ways and they did manage to put up a resilient display in front of a packed house at Molineux.

United had the first real opportunity in the first half when Romelu Lukaku’s header off Diogo Dalot’s cross from the right forced Rui Patricio to make a fine save.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side continued to create plenty of opportunities and it was Jesse Lingard who called Patricio into action once again with his powerful header.

Given their dominance in the final third in the opening stages of the game, an opener was always going to be on the cards for United. The goal, however, came from an unlikely source. Scott McTominay’s low drive from outside the box scraped the fingers of Patricio to hit the back of the net in the 13th minute, putting the visitors in the driver’s seat.

Wolves failed to create too many clear-cut chances and United could have doubled their advantage had Romelu Lukaku not dragged his shot wide.

The hosts, though, did find a reply. The strike force of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez has bailed them out innumerable times this season and the duo once again came to Wolves’ rescue.

Jimenez slipped the ball behind Chris Smalling to find Jota, who calmly beat de Gea to guide the ball into the net from close range to restore parity.

The goal somewhat seemed to lift the spirits of the home team and they could have had another one, only for Leander Dendoncker to blaze his shot wide from a promising situation.

However, it was United who started off as the brighter of the two teams in the second half and Scott McTominay’s downward header forced Patricio into a superb reflex save.

United kept on pushing for the winner but a bizarre red-card incident in the 57th minute turned the tables in the favour of the home side. Ashley Young was sent off for a second bookable offence after catching Jota on the leg with his studs in a dangerous manner.

Reduced to ten men and away from home, United were apparently content to settle for a point apiece, while Wolves never looked like getting a winner. However, it was another bizarre moment in the match that handed the home side all three points.

Chris Smalling failed to clear his lines off Dendoncker’s touch inside the box and put the ball into his own net in the 77th minute.

It the end, it was another resolute and disciplined display from Wolves and they were arguably the more clinical of the two sides.

The valuable three points saw Wolves strengthen their hold on the Europa League qualification spot while Man United were dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
