Two French players, Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Fils square off in the semifinals of the Open 13 on Saturday.
The world No. 60 is one win away from reaching his second final of the season. Bonzi defeated Luca Van Assche in two competitive sets 7-5, 7-5 to begin his Open 13 campaign. In the round of 16, Bonzi came back from a set down to beat 5th seed Maxime Cressy 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3. The Frenchman had a win percentage of 91 on the first serve and wasn’t broken in the entire match.
In the quarterfinals, Bonzi faced Alex de Minaur. The Aussie youngster had a 3-0 lead in the head-to-head going into the encounter against Bonzi. However, the 26-year-old managed to produce a dominating performance to win the match 6-2, 6-4. In the second set, Bonzi was 1-4 down but he made a solid comeback.
The French teenager is yet to drop a set in the tournament thus far. He has also reached his second consecutive semifinal. He is yet to be broken in the competition thus far. In the first round, Fils eased past Roman Safiullin in a lopsided encounter that ended 6-4, 6-3. Fils had a win percentage of 81 in the match. Fils received a walkover from Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.
In the semifinals, Fils faced Swiss veteran and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The 18-year-old outplayed the veteran, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Fils had a win percentage of 92 on the first serve.
The two players have never faced each other as yet and therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Benjamin Bonzi to win in three sets.
