Fifth seed Anhelina Kalinina locks horns with France’s Carole Monnet in the round of 32 of the Open de Limoges on Monday.
The Ukrainian athlete reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career at the Madrid Open. She also made her debut in the top 50 of the WTA rankings this year. After winning her first-round match at Wimbledon, Kalinina went on a losing streak of six matches that finally came to an end in the first round of the US Open.
Kalinina was most recently seen in action at the WTA 125 Angers Arena Loire Open. She entered the tournament as the second seed and dominated her way to the semifinals. However, she couldn’t progress further as German veteran Anna-Lena Friedsam defeated her in a relatively comfortable fashion.
The 21-year-old has played mostly in ITF events this year. She finished runner-up at the ITF events in Tunisia and Turkey in January and March, respectively. Monnet won the title at the ITF event in Portugal in October after defeating top seed Joanne Zuger in the final.
Like Kalinina, Monnet is also coming into the tournament after a semi-final exit at the previous tournament she played. At the ITF event in UAE, Monnet managed to defeat top seed Diana Shnaider before retiring mid-match against fellow Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot in the semis.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as Anhelina Kalinina and Carole Monnet have not crossed paths as yet.
Prediction: Anhelina Kalinina to win in straight sets.
