According to the Independent, Brighton and Hove Albion have handed striker Glenn Murray a new one-year contract extension. The veteran striker played a crucial role in lifting the Seagulls back into the Premier League two years ago. He has been in superb form this season as well, scoring 6 goals in 11 appearances so far.
Glenn Murray also reached a new milestone at the club, scoring a total of 100 goals across his three spells. The 35-year-old striker spent three seasons at the Amex stadium between 2008 and 2011. He scored a whopping 54 goals in 118 league appearances at the time. Murray then returned on loan during his time at Bournemouth to notch another 15 goals in 26 league appearances.
Surely offering him a new contract was the right move by Brighton. The Seagulls have made a positive start to their season under Chris Hughton and Murray though aged 35, has proven to be the focal point in this time. The veteran striker has been extremely clinical in front of goal and rarely wastes his chances.
The former Bournemouth striker has taken a total of 16 shots this season, of which 8 are on target, averaging a 50% shot success rate. he converted 6 of those chances, showing just how prolific the striker is at his ripe. He has also proven to be a menace for many defenders with his ability to make subtle runs in behind the defence. (Stats courtesy – Premier League)
It’s his undying attitude that makes him such a quality finisher. Murray also possesses superb positioning and awareness with/ without the ball. He is excellent at popping up at the right places and loves to send the Brighton fans into raptures.
The striker is also dominant in the air. He has averaged 5.1 aerial duels in the Premier League this season and though he is yet to score a headed goal in that time, Murray is more than capable of doing so. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)
Brighton rely on Murray to produce the goods on a consistent basis. The Seagulls don’t possess any other equally prolific option in their squad and that is why the former Bournemouth striker will once again play a pivotal role in their season.
Murray scored 12 goals in 35 appearances last season. He has already racked up 6 this season and has a chance to break his tally from the last campaign. (Stats courtesy – Premier League)
The Seagulls have definitely made the right move handing him a new contract. Surely Glenn Murray is a Brighton legend at the moment and will always be remembered for his efforts. The least they can for him at this age is keep him at the Amex stadium for a further year before he finally decides to hang up his boots.
