Why Leicester City should make a move for Watford’s Christian Kabasele

Back in August 2019, the Daily Mail had claimed that Leicester City were interested in signing Watford defender Christian Kabasele. However, no deal materialised and he stayed put at Vicarage Road.

Watford signed Christian Kabasele, 29, back in 2016 from KRC Genk and he has been one of their best players ever since. He has made 89 appearances for the Hornets, scoring five goals in the process. The two-cap Belgium international has regained his form under the tutelage of Nigel Pearson, whose side are 17th in the table.

Despite being sent off twice this season, Kabasele has been one of the rare bright sparks for the Hornets in an otherwise disappointing campaign. That being said, Leicester City must revive their interest in the Watford defender when the transfer window opens in the summer.

The Foxes are in a position of strength as far as the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League is concerned. They have coped well with the departure of Harry Maguire to Manchester United last summer, with Caglar Soyuncu stepping up to the plate.

Soyuncu and Jonny Evans have formed a strong partnership at the back, with Leicester only conceding only 28 goals in 29 games. To add some much-needed cover for the pair, Brendan Rodgers signed Ryan Bennett on loan from Wolves in January. At the same time, he allowed the young Filip Benkovic to leave the cub on loan to Championship outfit Bristol City.

Wes Morgan, 36, has been a fantastic servant to Leicester since arriving from Nottingham Forest in 2012. However, at the age of 36, he is in the final stages of his career and is out of contract in June. Thus, the Foxes’ need for options at the back next season is clearly evident and Rodgers should plot a move for Christian Kabasele.

Kabasele had his best season in Watford colours last season, although he managed only 21 Premier League outings. He helped his team finish 11th in the table and reach the FA Cup finals, where the Hornets were thrashed 6-0 at the Wembley Stadium.

Verdict

The Congo-born Belgium international has proven to be a reliable performer for Watford over the last few years and at the age of 29, the centre-back is operating at the peak of his powers.

This may be his best opportunity to test himself at a higher level and play in Europe. Kabasele would definitely strengthen Leicester’s backline and also add depth to Brendan Rodgers’ squad. He is a proven Premier League material and would be a valuable addition for the Foxes.

Thus, Rodgers should not hesitate to acquire Kabasele’s signature ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
