Two unseeded players – Tereza Martincova and Ekaterina Alexandrova will face each other in the quarter-finals of the Ostrava Open 2022 on Friday.
The 27-year-old came to Ostrava after being ousted in the round of 16 of the Tallinn Open last month. Martincova is one win away from reaching her second semifinal this year.
The world No. 78 began her campaign in the Ostrava Open with a hard-fought win in straight sets against Jil Teichmann. The match ended 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5) in favor of Martincova. In the round of 16, Martincova was in the lead against No. 2 seed and defending champion Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 when the latter was forced to retire with an injury.
The world No. 21 has been on a roll as of late. She won the Korea Open before coming to Ostrava. Alexandrova defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the final and has taken her winning streak to seven with two solid performances in the Ostrava Open.
She defeated two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka in the first round in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the round of 16, Alexandrova got the better of Daria Kasatkina in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) to reach the quarter-finals.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 3-3. Their last encounter was in the round of 16 in Petersburg last year. The Russian tennis pro won the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Prediction: Ekaterina Alexandrova to win in three sets.
