She also reached impressive world rankings, ascending to No. 3 in singles and holding the top spot at No. 1 in doubles. Shriver made her initial mark on the tennis scene during the 1978 US Open, capturing attention as a 16-year-old amateur. She displayed her potential by advancing to the women’s singles final, notably defeating the reigning Wimbledon champion, Martina Navratilova, in the semifinals. However, her journey at that tournament concluded with a loss to Chris Evert in the final. Although this early accomplishment at the US Open marked a significant moment in her singles career, Shriver’s success in singles remained at its peak during this time. She went on to secure her first singles title in 1978 in Columbus, Ohio, and over the span of two decades, she achieved a total of 21 singles titles, extending from 1978 to 1997.

Shriver’s distinctive style on the tennis court was characterized by her impressive variety of skills, particularly her sharp volleys and well-rounded technique at the net. Her arsenal also featured a potent slice forehand and an effective underspin approach, setting her apart from her peers in women’s tennis. However, in contrast to her strengths, she had a relatively weaker chip backhand. Shriver was renowned for her serve-and-volley style of play, which emphasized aggressive tactics at the net.
