World No. 14 Pablo Carreno Busta will face world No. 31, Tommy Paul in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters on Thursday.
The 31-year-old will be the third consecutive Spaniard who will try to end the promising run of Tommy Paul. Pablo Carreno Busta has already bettered his last year’s result in the Paris Masters. He came into the tournament on the back of an exit in the quarterfinals of the Basel Open.
The veteran began his Paris Masters campaign with a comprehensive win against fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The match ended 6-3, 6-3 in favor of Carreno Busta. He went on to face a confident Denis Shapovalov in the round of 32. After winning a close first set, the Spaniard was blown away in the second set. He managed to use all his experience to win the match 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-4.
The American tennis pro had a disastrous Vienna Open campaign where he lost in the first round against Dominic Thiem. Paul’s best result this season came very early on in the piece as he made it to the semis in the Delray Beach Open.
The 25-year-old began his campaign in the Paris Masters against Roberto Bautista Agut. Paul defeated the Spanish veteran in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. A big test awaited Paul in the round of 32 as he squared off against 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. The youngster lost the first set comprehensively but managed to dig deep and bag the second set. In the final set, Nadal didn’t look as good as we know he is but it takes nothing away from how well Paul played. The New Jersey-born player won the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Pablo Carreno Busta to win in three sets.
