Pat Rafter Career

Pat Rafter is a former Australian tennis player, who played professionally on the ATP tour for more than a decade. Rafter is one of the greatest tennis players to come out of Australia and dominated the professional circuit in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rafter is a two-time US Open Champion in men’s singles and one-time Australian Open Champion in doubles besides being a former World No.1 and a Davis Cup champion with Australia.

Rafter had an illustrious professional career spanning more than a decade. Some of the major highlights from his career include his consecutive US Open titles in 1997 and 1998, back to back runner-up appearances at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001, winning the 1999 Australian Open men’s doubles tournament with Jonas Björkman, winning the Davis Cup in 1999 besides two singles and two doubles ATP Masters titles. Rafter achieved his career-best ranking of World No.1 in men’s singles in 1999 but his stay at the top was short-lived.

In 1998, Rafter became the first player in the Open Era to win the American Summer Slam – Canada Masters, Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. Till date, only Andy Roddick (2003) and Rafael Nadal (2013) have been able to emulate this feat. The Australian is also only the third man in the Open Era (after Rod Laver and Stefan Edberg) to reach semifinals or better of every Grand Slam tournament in both singles and doubles categories. Rafter officially retired from the sport in 2003.
