West Ham were lucky enough to retain their place in the Premier League after a horrendous start in the previous season. Slaven Bilic’s Hammers failed to make an impact and the manager was eventually sacked. The club then appointed former Manchester United coach David Moyes.
Under Moyes’s guidance, the Hammers were able to finish 13th in the league. West Ham also conceded a whopping 68 goals and it goes without saying that they must improve in the upcoming season.
New manager Manuel Pellegrini has come in and things have already brightened up at the London stadium. The well-renowned manager should help attract a number of big players to the club. To that end, West Ham are reportedly interested in Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.
The England midfielder announced that he would be leaving the Gunners for free, ending a 17-year spell with Arsenal. Wilshere found game time hard to come by last season and he must look for a new adventure now.
The 26-year-old made 20 appearances for Arsenal in the league last season, scoring 1 goal and providing 3 assists in the process. The midfielder deserves credit for his performances at the club but his injury record severely undermined his career.
Wilshere was once touted to become one of the best central midfielders in the world. The 26-year-old has an exceptional ability on the ball, with exquisite first touches. He is brilliant at picking the ball up from the defence and carrying it to the midfield, before supplying one of the attackers with a sublime pass.
Wilshere’s passing ability is quite impressive and his distribution skills are top-notch. In fact, he was often instrumental in Arsenal’s victories, as he bossed proceedings in the middle of the park with his creativity and vision.
He also enjoyed a successful loan spell with Bournemouth in the 2016/17 campaign. During his stint with the Cherries, the midfielder had completed a full 90 minutes on the field for the first time since 2014. Hence, it’s clear that there might be something about Arsenal’s training methods Wilshere just can’t cope with.
A move to West Ham would see him become their go-to guy in the midfield. Given Manuel Lanzini’s long-term injury, Wilshere could be the one pulling the strings for the Hammers. The likes of Marko Arnautoivc and Javier Hernandez, who scored 11 goals and 8 goals respectively, would thrive off his supply.
Pellegrini would certainly relish the prospect of working with Wilshere, who is available for free this summer. The Arsenal star is a steal for a player who would cost nothing. The Hammers must try and sign him in order to return to their best ways next season. It’s evident that the East Londoners are in dire need of a new attacking midfielder, making Wilshere a great addition to the squad.
