Sixers superstar Joel Embiid sparked an attack on VAR after Manchester City’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday.
Joel Embiid will soon have the task of getting his Philly team past the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. But before that, he grabbed headlines for a tweet he put out during the thrilling Man City vs Liverpool clash in the English Premier League.
The five-time All-Star was watching the top two teams in the Premier League go neck and neck on Sunday and took a massive dig at the newly-included technology VAR (Video Assistant Referee). Embiid went on to reveal that the on-field referees should just make their decisions on the field rather than wait for VAR to make decisions.
The Sixers talisman took to Twitter and dubbed VAR as the worst thing ever. “VAR has to be the worst thing ever… just let the referees make decisions and live with the results.” Embiid tweeted. Embiid’s tweet appeared around the time Raheem Sterling’s goal was disallowed for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.
Nevertheless, the top of the table clash between Man City and Liverpool ended 2-2, with Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus scoring for the Cityzens while Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane scored to get Liverpool on level terms twice in the game. The draw meant that City kept their one-point lead at the summit of the PL table.
VAR has become a controversial topic ever since its introduction in football with many fans and pundits also calling out the technology. And clearly, Embiid has revealed that he is not a fan of the new technology.
