Premier League Team of the Week Matchday 17

Just like any other round of Premier League football, Matchday 17 of the 2019-20 Premier League had plenty of drama and excitement for all sets of fans to relish.

Liverpool continued their dominance atop the standings with yet another systematic 2-0 victory over Watford while reigning champions Man City returned to winning ways with a 3-0 demolition of Arsenal at the Emirates, thanks to a an incredible all-round display from Kevin de Bruyne.

Leicester City dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Norwich City, Tottenham closed the gap on the top-four with a smash-and-grab 2-1 victory over Wolves, Man United and Everton played out a drab 1-1 draw, while Bournemouth sprung the surprise of the weekend and put an end to their five-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

Without further ado, let us get down to the Premier League Team of the Week for Matchday 17, assembled in a 4-3-3 formation.

1. Aaron Ramsdale (GK)

The 21-year-old England U-21 international has done an excellent job for Bournemouth between the sticks this season and he once again played a key role in the Cherries’ 1-0 surprise victory over Chelsea, pulling off point-blank saves to keep out Emerson and Mason Mount.

2. George Baldock (RB)

Sheffield United continued their fine run of form in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over fellow promoted side Aston Villa and Baldock was a constant threat with his drive and energy down the right-hand side of the pitch.

3. Fernandinho (CB)

The veteran has once again been a standout performer for the reigning champions this term, despite featuring in an unfamiliar central defensive role, and he put up another commanding display to preserve a clean-sheet against Arsenal.

The Brazilian also played a key role in the build-up to City’s first goal in a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

4. Chris Mepham (CB)

The Welshman has always been a regular inclusion in Eddie Howe’s playing eleven in the Premier League but he grabbed his opportunity with both hands in the absence of Nathan Ake and Steve Cook, making a number of vital interventions to guide the Cherries to a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

5. Jan Vertonghen (LB)

The veteran had his fair share of struggles in dealing with the pace of Adama Traore but he deserves a place in the elite eleven of the week after his fantastic late winner secured all three points for Jose Mourinho’s side against Wolves.

6. Jefferson Lerma (CDM)

The Colombian has really been his usual destructive self in the middle of the park this season but he came out of his shell to nullify Chelsea’s creative cavalry with his drive, determination and tenacity, making some impressive ball recoveries to mastermind a 1-0 victory.

7. John Fleck (LCM)

The Scotsman capped off a man-of-the-match performance with a well-taken brace at the weekend to guide Sheffield United to a 2-0 victory over the Aston Villa. An energetic all-round display hallmarked by some intelligent runs into the box meant that Fleck bagged his fourth goal in as many games at Bramall Lane.

8. Kevin de Bruyne (RCM)

Right foot. left foot. Bang!. Bang! De Bruyne’s virtuoso display against Arsenal makes him our Player of the Week. The Belgian completely ripped the Gunners apart and a superb overall display probably encapsulated everything that a modern-day attacking midfielder would love to dream of.

9. Mo Salah (RW)

Having scored against Bournemouth and RB Salzburg in recent fixtures, the Egyptian once again showed his class and capped off an influential display with a brace as Liverpool romped home to a 2-0 victory over bottom-table Watford.

10. Michail Antonio (LW)

Quick, physical, direct and devastating- the perfect set of adjectives to describe Antonio’s performance in West Ham’s 1-0 victory over Southampton.

The Hammers haven’t really had the best of times over the past couple of months but with the strike pairing of Antonio and Haller showing signs of flourishing, Manuel Pellegrini could just have found a solution to the club’s scoring woes.

11. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST)

The youngster’s resurgence under Duncan Ferguson has been there for everybody to see. After bagging a brace in the 3-1 victory over Chelsea, Calvert-Lewin once again impressed with his tenacity, hold-up play and tireless running on Sunday as Everton secured a point against Man United.
