The Premier League is bristling with attacking talents who are setting the top-flight alight as the campaign approaches Christmas. Last season’s Golden Boot award was split three ways by African trio Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
With 22 goals each, it was the lowest total to secure the award since Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov shared the honour with 20 goals after the 2010/11 campaign.
The race for the Premier League Golden Boot continues as we enter the winter months. Leicester City star Jamie Vardy sits atop the leaderboard with 16 goals in 16 gameweeks, though Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is not far behind as the nearest challenger with 11 for the campaign.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marcus Rashford are the only other players currently in double figures with 10 for Arsenal and Manchester United respectively. They are followed by the likes of Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Danny Ings and Sadio Mane, all of whom have bagged 9.
Here are the top 3 contenders for the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2019-20 campaign.
Leicester City have continued their wonderful 2019/20 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Watford on Wednesday and a 4-1 win vs Aston Villa in the weekend. And once again, Jamie Vardy was the man to make the headlines.
Against Watford, Vardy opened the scoring from the penalty spot, marking the seventh consecutive game in which he has scored. He took it up a notch by bagging two goals against the Villans. It has taken the Englishman’s tally to 16 for the season so far, strengthening his lead at the top of the Premier League’s goalscoring charts.
As the league gets set to embark on tougher times, a revitalized Vardy, who has run the show for Leicester and has been vital in their surge to the second spot, will have a chance to add to his tally. If his form continues, he will surely be a top contender for the Golden Boot.
Following a tough week in which league defeats to Manchester City and West Ham came on either side of a Champions League draw at Valencia, Chelsea notched up a win against Aston Villa. Abraham reinforced his importance to Lampard’s side, scoring the opener and setting up the second in Chelsea’s 2-1 win. However, that was followed by a 3-1 loss to Everton over the weekend.
After being hit with a transfer ban, things went from bad to worse for Chelsea after losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. With Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi not nailing down a place in the starting XI, Abraham, 22, had a glimmer of hope at Chelsea.
He has taken every chance and has now emerged as a contender for the Premier League Golden Boot.
The newly-appointed club captain, who joined for £56m, has continued his rich vein of form and has scored 10 goals already this term after sharing the Golden Boot with Mane and Salah last season.
His opening goal against Wolves in the Premier League has taken him to the 50-goal mark for Arsenal, in only his 78th appearance. His consistency has stopped Arsenal’s difficult campaign from sinking too low. Following him on the list of players to reach 50 goals for Arsenal is Joe Baker, who did it in 60 games.
The striker again scored two goals as the Gunners laboured a 2-2 draw against Norwich City in Freddie Ljungberg’s first game in charge. If his form continues, the Gabon international is capable of challenging Vardy and Abraham for the Golden Boot this season.
