It’s claimed that PlayStation 5 sales have gained more market share than PlayStation 4 Generation in the US!
People have been dying to get a PlayStation 5 (PS5) since it came out in November 2020. But how strong are PlayStation 5 sales, and are the reports that it is the market leader completely true? Let’s look at the facts and figure out what’s true and what’s not.
A tech expert named Zuby_Tech recently tweeted that the PS5 has the most sales around the world. Even though the PS5 has regularly sold more units around the world than its main rival, the Xbox Series X/S, calling it the clear winner is premature.
Sony hasn’t released official PlayStation 5 sales numbers for each area, so it’s hard to say for sure that the PS5 is the world’s best-selling console. Also, the global chip shortage has had a big effect on console output, which makes it even harder to make straight comparisons between regions.
When we look at the US market, things become more clear. VGChartz, a website that tracks video game sales, says that the PS5 has 57.9% of the market share in the US right now. This is especially interesting because it’s higher than the PS4’s market share at the same point in its life. This shows that the PS5 has been well received by American gamers, possibly doing better than its predecessor.
In a tweet, Zuby_Tech also said that the PS5 has the most game sales in the US. But, just like with world sales claims, there isn’t enough solid proof to back up this claim. Even though the US is a big market for PlayStation, it’s not possible to say for sure that it’s the biggest without regional game sales numbers from Sony or industry experts.
Even though it’s not entirely clear what the world sales numbers are or which games are selling the most, the PS5 is clearly in a strong situation. Its large part of the US market and steady sales success around the world make the console’s future look bright. The PS5’s story will continue to play as Sony deals with the chip shortage and possibly releases more units. In the coming months, this will give a more accurate picture of how popular it really is.
Console | Total Sales (US) | Market Share (%) | Lead vs. Aligned Launch (Units) | YoY Market Share Change (%) |
PlayStation 5 | 17,163,159 | 57.9 | 4,707,064 | 3.2 |
Xbox Series X | S | 12,456,095 | 42.1 | -1,900,000 |
PlayStation 4 (Aligned Launch) | 15,932,888 | – | – | – |
Xbox One (Aligned Launch) | 14,356,095 | – | – | – |
You can see that the PlayStation 5 is far ahead of the Xbox Series X|S in the US in terms of both total sales and market share. The table also shows that the PlayStation 5 is doing better than the PlayStation 4, while the Xbox Series X|S is not as good as the Xbox One.
Remember: It’s important to look at claims made on social media with a critical eye, especially if they don’t have any sources mentioned. Even though the PS5 has a lot of sales and a big part of the market, official sources are needed to prove any claims about its global and regional leadership.
