Predicted Manchester United XI to face Liverpool in the Premier League

Manchester United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night and the Red Devils will be up against it once again when they make the trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho’s men demolished Fulham 4-1 in their previous outing in the Premier League but they will need to produce one of their best displays of the season to upset the odds at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool will be high on confidence going into the game after sealing their berth in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Napoli.

Team News

Jose Mourinho has plenty of injuries to contend with for Sunday’s game. Chris Smalling is ruled out with an ankle injury while Luke Shaw is still doubtful to feature as he continues his recovery from a muscular injury. Anthony Martial will be pushing for a return while Diogo Dalot, Scott McTominay, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian are all set to face late fitness tests before the game. Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez have already been ruled out with long-term injuries.

Predicted XI

1. David De Gea (GK)

He was rested for the Champions League tie but should return to take his position between the sticks for this one.

2. Antonio Valencia (RB)

He hasn’t played much this season due to injuries and had a lacklustre outing against Valencia but he should continue amidst the injury crisis.

3. Eric Bailly (CB)

The Ivorian has been out of favour in the Premier League this season but might be amongst the starters for this one.

4. Phil Jones (CB)

The Englishman scored a bizarre own goal in the last game and will be expected to put in a better shift at the heart of the defence.

5. Ashley Young (LB)

Injuries to Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw might force Mourinho to shift the veteran to the left-hand side of the defence.

6. Marouane Fellaini (CDM)

He hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks and United will need him to step up his game.

7. Paul Pogba (LAM)

The Frenchman didn’t have much of an impact against Valencia but he is one of the most high-profile players in the squad and Mourinho should rely on him.

8. Ander Herrera (RAM)

Fred was largely disappointing in the last game and Mourinho should hand the Spaniard a start as he has put in some good performances in recent weeks.

9. Juan Mata (RW)

The Spaniard missed a golden opportunity to level the game against Valencia and he will need to improve considerably on Sunday against Liverpool.

He has by far been United’s brightest player in the attacking third in the last few games and Mourinho should hand him another start.
