Premier League Opinion: Top 5 PL goalkeepers of the season

There was a time in football when goalkeepers were fairly inexpensive commodities who were available in abundance across all the top European clubs.

Over the last many years, the position has goalkeeper has evolved quite a bit making keeping your place in a top-side that much harder.

Goalkeeping isn’t just about protecting your posts and stopping shots anymore.

The new-age goalkeeper is expected to be the first line of attack and if often expected to use his feet to distribute short rather than playing it long; as was the old trend. Keepers are now also required to be versatile as their ball control and first-touches have to be precise as well.

The Premier League is a prime example of this very notion in effect as both of the title-contenders, Manchester City and Liverpool, did splurge a lot of money to bring in a solid figure between the sticks who also ticked all the secondary boxes.

Another such example is Chelsea’s world-record transfer of Kepa Arizzabalaga with the Spaniard costing the Blues an absolute fortune to bring in.

Given the season that has just passed up, here are the top-5 goalkeepers of the Premier League season:

5- Lukasz Fabianski – West Ham United

The former Arsenal man has been one of West Ham United’s saving graces this season as he has stepped up to the plate on multiple occasions to ensure that their leaky defence didn’t concede any more unnecessary goals.

Despite a fairly disappointing campaign for the Hammers, Fabianski should be happy with the season that he’s had.

4- Kepa Arizzabalaga – Chelsea

The Spaniard has looked assured with the ball at his feet and has even got a strong ability to read and intercept crosses into the box.

His first season in England could still be a successful one with Chelsea set to contest the Europa League final but overall, he’s done a very good job since making the big-money switch to Stamford Bridge.

3- Bernd Leno – Arsenal

The German keeper didn’t break into the Arsenal starting XI till a few weeks into the season but since he was promoted, there hasn’t been much reason to drop him.

Leno has looked sharp in between the sticks and despite the rather bleak defence line that Arsenal boast, he has managed to keep them in some vital games at times.

2- Allison – Liverpool

Many would argue that the Brazilian deserves to be labelled the best goalkeeper of the season but he did have his moments of blemish along the course of the campaign.

He has been an inspired signing by Jurgen Klopp who has struggled with goalkeepers in the past but Allison Becker is quite clearly the real deal.

1- Ederson – Manchester City

Ederson was largely an unknown quantity when he was linked to Manchester City but he has now been transformed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Often dubbed ‘a midfielder playing in goal’, Ederson’s swift reflexes and flexibility are enough to ensure that he locks down the number one spot as the best goalkeeper of the Premier League season.
