If you have seen ‘F’ in the twitch chat or anywhere after anything sad has happened you may be confused as to the meaning of that. Let’s dive into the origin of the Press F to pay respects meme.
The internet doesn’t need much to create a meme. Just some random photo can be a viral meme within 2 days. The memes are mostly created from some iconic scenes in movies, television and games.
The memes get more popular if they are a bit offbeat and unexpected. This is exactly what happened with the ‘Press F to pay respects’ meme.
The game developers and the writers have spent hours so that the players can connect to the characters by writing heart-wrenching stories and characters. Games have become a legitimate storytelling medium with iconic and emotional experiences for the players. But when the game turns a heartfelt and emotional moment into a dumb button prompt it creates a viral meme.
Activision released Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014. The game is a traditional FPS with a campaign mode where you play as Private First Class Jack Mitchell of the Marine Corps. At the end of the first mission, Mitchell’s best friend, Private Will Irons is killed in action. Moreover, Irons sacrifices himself when he pushes Mitchell away from the vehicle which is about to be blown up. Mitchell loses his left arm while Irons loses his life.
A cutscene takes place when you attend Irons’ funeral. During this cutscene, the infamous scene takes place where the game prompts you to pay your respect to your fellow soldier by a button push. In the PC version of the game, the default button is the F key, and thus “Press F to pay Respect” appears on the screen. While in the console version, the default key is X, that version of the meme has also become popular.
The meme has become so popular that more versions of it have been spawned like “F in the chat.” This meme gave a new meaning to the letter F. Where it is associated with failure and sorrow. The letter F is spammed in the twitch chat when something sad happens.
