3rd seed Daniil Medvedev faces 2nd seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals of the 2023 Qatar Open on Friday.
The Russian star came into the tournament on the back of a triumphant campaign in the ATP Rotterdam Open where he won the title. After receiving a bye into the second round, Medvedev got the better of Liam Broady in the round of 16. The former world No. 2 sailed into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Davis and also converted 4 out of 6 break points in the encounter.
Medvedev faced Christopher O’Connell in the quarterfinals. The 2021 US Open champion was made to fight hard for points but he eventually emerged victorious in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Medvedev had a win percentage of 78 on the first serve in this match that lasted 1 hour and 55 minutes.
The 22-year-old came into the tournament after being ousted in the quarterfinals of the ATP Rotterdam Open. He has managed to pass the quarter-final test in Qatar.
In the round of 16, Auger-Aliassime lost the first set to Jason Kubler. A spirited fightback saw the Canadian youngster register a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. The big-serving Auger-Aliassime managed to send in 15 aces. In the quarterfinals, Auger-Aliassime showed a lot of grit and determination to oust 7th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The match ended 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in favor of Auger-Aliassime who wasn’t broken throughout the match. He also had a win percentage of 86 on the first serve.
The head-to-head scoreline sees Medvedev having a commendable 5-0 lead against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Their most recent encounter came in the 2023 ATP Rotterdam Open last week where the Russian star won the match 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
