Adele James from Casualty, John Partridge from EastEnders, and Michael Greco from General Hospital are all featured in the Netflix production of Cleopatra.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s new documentary series, African Queens, introduces viewers to the courageous and fascinating lives of queens who were probably not covered in Western school curricula. Queen Cleopatra, one of history’s most recognizable figures, is featured in this newest edition. The new series intends to re-evaluate Cleopatra’s intriguing biography, including her love life, from a fresh perspective, and to showcase one of Cleopatra’s finest weapons: her intelligence.

Pinkett Smith, looking for role models for her daughter Willow, narrates the second season of the documentary series as it recreates the historical biography of Queen Cleopatra. Season one of African Queens focused on Queen Njinga, a warrior queen who reigned over the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba in what is now modern-day Angola.

Pinkett Smith tells Tudum, “We don’t often get to see or hear stories about Black queens, and that was important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tons of them,” since Black queens are seldom shown or discussed in popular media. It’s a shame that the stories of the strong, influential women who built Africa’s countries are lost to time.

Adele James plays Queen Cleopatra in the show (Casualty). Casting an actress of mixed origin as Cleopatra is a clever allusion to the ongoing debate. Regarding the ancient ruler’s race. Egypt’s population was diverse in culture and race throughout her reign. The names of Cleopatra’s mother and paternal grandfather were unknown, and there was no reason to believe that Cleopatra’s race would ever be recorded. Some think she was a local Egyptian lady, while others believe she was Greek.

The aim of African Queens has always been to uncover the hidden histories of powerful women from the past and what made them leaders that we still talk about today. Working with leading historians and experts including Shelley Haley (Professor of Classics and African Studies, Hamilton College) and Dr. Sally-Ann Ashton (Cleopatra scholar),

we explore Cleopatra’s story as a queen, strategist, ruler of formidable intellect as well as a woman whose heritage is the subject of great debate. Her ethnicity is not the focus of Queen Cleopatra, but we did intentionally decide to depict her of mixed ethnicity to reflect theories about Cleopatra’s possible Egyptian ancestry and the multicultural nature of ancient Egypt.” As said by the producers of the series

Dr. Ashton, an expert interviewed for the show. Says, “Given that Cleopatra represents herself as an Egyptian, it seems strange to insist on depicting her as wholly European“.

The Netflix documentary series Queen Cleopatra premieres on May 10. Cleopatra will be played by Casualty’s Adele James, Julius Caesar by EastEnders’ John Partridge. Marc Antony by The Last Kingdom’s Craig Russell, and Pothinus by former EastEnders actor Michael Greco.
