Early life and College Career
Growing up in Athens, Alabama, Watkins attended Athens High School. In the first two games of his junior season, he scored touchdowns on punt and kickoff returns. He caught 44 passes for 847 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year, earning a spot on the second team of the 6A All-State. He turned down offers to play collegiate football from Samford, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State, and Western Kentucky in favor of Southern Miss.
Watkins sat out his actual rookie year. He had 23 receptions for 337 yards and two touchdowns the next season. Watkins was voted as the First team All-Conference USA as a redshirt sophomore and led the Golden Eagles with 72 receptions, 889 receiving yards, and nine touchdown catches. Despite missing the first two games of the season due to a suspension, Watkins was once again a first-team All-Conference USA pick as a redshirt junior after receiving 64 catches for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns. In order to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, Watkins declared that he would forgo his last year of NCAA eligibility.
NFL Career
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Watkins with the 200th overall choice in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. On September 6, 2020, he was placed on injured reserve. On September 29, he was given the go-ahead to rejoin the team and resume practicing with them. On October 10, he was activated. Watkins caught three passes for 40 yards and his first career touchdown grab in Week 15’s 33-26 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
