Rafael Nadal’s injury status: The Spaniard has given no assurance that he will be able to play in the Wimbledon 2022 semifinal against Nick Kyrgios.
Although Rafael Nadal battled long and hard through injury to get a stunning win over Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final of Wimbledon 2022, the Spaniard may struggle to get through the pain barrier against Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final on Friday. Nadal beat Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10/4) in a match lasting four hours and 21 minutes as he made his way to an eighth Wimbledon semifinal, keeping hopes of a calendar grand slam still intact.
But the victory came at a cost as Nadal was suffering from an abdominal injury during the course of the match. At one point, he even considered retiring but eventually decided to play on and found the will to get the victory. Now, ahead of another potential blockbuster clash against Nick Kyrgios, the 22-time Grand Slam winner is unsure whether his current Wimbledon tournament has come to an end.
Nadal is set to square off against Kyrgios on Friday. However, when asked about whether he will be fit to face the Australian, Nadal said, “I don’t know. Honestly, I can’t give you a clear answer. Because if I give you an answer and tomorrow something happens, I will be a liar.” Nadal had to take a medical break during his clash against Fritz and also added that he considered retiring on many occasions.
Even though Nadal seems to be in clear discomfort, he is expected to play against Kyrgios. Nevertheless, this time around, we may see him opt to retire during the match if he is unable to play due to the pain. After his triumph at the Roland Garros last month, Nadal admitted that he is used to playing with pain amid a foot injury.
