Why Rangers must make a move for young Rayhaan Tulloch

According to Football Insider (h/t Birmingham Mail), Rangers have West Bromwich Albion forward Rayhaan Tulloch on their radar.

The 19-year-old Tulloch is a regular in the West Brom under-23 sides and even made an appearance for the senior side in the FA Cup under manager Slaven Bilic.

However, Tulloch’s current contract at the Hawthorns is set to expire this summer and the club are yet to offer a new deal for their young striker. Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were interested in Tulloch in January and the Scottish side are still in pursuit of the talented youngster.

He is yet to feature for Bilic’s side in the Championship, wherein West Brom have enjoyed a successful campaign so far. They are currently second and only one point behind leaders Leeds United this season, mainly due to the good form of their veteran forwards Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu.

Despite Austin and Robson-Kanu performing consistently for West Brom, Tulloch has managed to make three appearances for them in the FA Cup due to his eye-catching displays in the Premier League 2.

He scored 9 goals and provided 4 assists from 14 league games, prompting Bilic to feature him as a substitute against sides such as Charlton Athletic, West Ham United and Newcastle United.

Bringing Tulloch to Ibrox the safest option for Rangers

Gerrard’s Rangers need a new striker in their ranks, with the future of their main man Alfredo Morelos remaining uncertain as of now. The Colombian finisher has been the subject of transfer speculation for quite some time now.

Moreover, they just have veterans Jermain Defoe and Greg Stewart as back-up and losing Morelos could hurt them.

Though Defoe has been in top form, scoring 13 goals for Rangers in the league this term, he will turn 38 this October. The former Premier League striker is clearly nearing the end of his career and Rangers definitely need a new striker in their midst.

Stewart, on the other hand, turned 30 last March. However, he is not Gerrard’s most favoured player having featured just 16 times in the league this season. Hence, roping in an upcoming youngster like Tulloch seems like a safe option by the Scottish side.

Verdict

Leaving aside Morelos, Rangers lack depth in their striking department with the rest of the side’s two strikers already past their thirties. A new young face like Tulloch can add more vigour and confidence to their attack. Moreover, he is still in his teens and can develop even further under Gerrard’s guidance.
