Rangers Opinion: Why Joe Aribo would be a wonderful signing for Rangers?
According to a report from the Daily Record, Rangers have begun discussions with Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo over a possible move to Ibrox.
Aribo, 22, has excelled at the Valley with 10 goals and five assists this past season, helping Charlton achieve promotion to the Championship. However, the 22-year-old is out of contract at Charlton at the end of the month and will make a decision on his future this week, with the likes of Celtic, Aston Villa and Southampton also in the race for his signature.
Considering the interest in the talented midfielder, including their rivals Celtic also keen, Rangers have to win the race for Aribo.
Rangers have already signed up Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Steven Davis ahead of the new season while Greg Stewart is also set to arrive. That just tells one about the planning Steven Gerrard and co. have done behind the scenes before the summer transfer window had commenced.
Gers boss Steven Gerrard harbors to win the Scottish Premiership title next season after a good debut season at the Ibrox. His side finished nine points behind Celtic despite beating them twice this term. The 39-year-old tactician knows this summer is crucial if his side are to bridge the gap to their traditional rivals, who recently won their eighth straight league title.
Scott Arfield was the only source of creativity for Rangers this past season and lack of flair players cost Gerrard’s men dearly at times. The Teddy Bears failed to carve open teams that sat deep and defended in numbers. Thus, bringing a player with creativity and real guile to the side is extremely imperative for Gerrard and Joe Aribo fits the bill perfectly.
Gerrard preferred 4-3-3/ 4-4-1-1 formation throughout his first season at the Ibrox. Ryan Jack did his job well as a holding midfielder and on-loan Lassana Coulibaly, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Ross McCrorie were rotated for the next two berths as advanced midfielders. However, the January arrival of Glen Kamara from Dundee changed the whole scenario as he quickly nailed down a place in the starting XI.

If Aribo joins the Gers, Gerrard can potentially have a very exciting midfield trio including Jack and Kamara.
Aribo will not only add quality to Gerrard’s squad but also bring in a much-needed competition for Arfield. The 22-year-old is very strong on the ball with the ability to pick out a pass and drive the team forward. His presence in the engine room will help add more fluidity to Rangers’ play in the final third.
Verdict
If Rangers are confident that Aribo can make the step up to the Scottish Premiership, Gerrard should do everything possible to thrash out a deal.
