Why former Tottenham flop Clinton N’Jie isn’t a great option for Fulham

Daily Mail has reported that Fulham have joined the race for former Tottenham star Clinton N’Jie, as the club looks for other options to top goal-scorer Alexander Mitrovic. Few Premier League fans will actually remember Clinton N’Jie. The 25-year-old made just eight appearances in the Premier League with him eventually leaving on loan to Marseille.

It did not start well for the then 21-year-old, who struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane with Mauricio Pochettino eventually opting to use Harry Kane as his main striker. However, it wasn’t all bad for the 25-year-old as he had a lot of promise when he first arrived from Olympique Lyon, doing relatively well there in his last season.

A full season for N’Jie ended with the forward scoring 7 goals and producing a further 8 assists, which isn’t by any means world-class contribution but it showed his talents. His strength combined with his incredible speed made him a useful asset to any side in the world but his inconsistency could hurt Fulham.

This season has seen him struggle, finding the net just once in five appearances with manager Rudi Garcia opting to use either Valere Germain or Konstantinos Mitroglou in his stead. Last season saw him once hit the same heights he did at Olympique Lyon, scoring 9 goals and producing a further seven assists in all competitions.

But despite that, N’Jie has still struggled and might not be a player Fulham really need at the moment. While his pace will be useful for the Cottagers, N’Jie’s troubles in front of goal will create more problems than answer solutions, which is something manager Claudio Ranieri doesn’t need. However, there is another solution for both parties and it involves a loan spell with an option to buy.

Daily Mail has revealed that Marseille want to send the 25-year-old out on loan with an option to make the move permanent, and it could be a good chance to view what he could offer. In all likelihood, he might struggle on his return but if Clinton N’Jie turns out to be even half the star that Jamie Vardy is, maybe Ranieri will find another diamond in the rough.

The Leicester City striker once struggled like N’Jie but thanks to Ranieri’s faith and Vardy’s work rate, he became a crucial part of the Leicester City dream team that won the 2015/16 Premier League title.
