Why signing Marcelo Brozovic is a waste of time and money

According to Libero (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have taken an interest in signing Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are trying to cut off the €60m release clause in his contract and seal a new deal, with the Croatian impressing for the Serie A side. Brozovic, who has had many ups and downs during his career at Inter, is now enjoying his life at San Siro under new boss Antonio Conte.

The 27-year-old has been deployed in his preferred deeper role by Conte that has seen him make a total of 32 appearances across all competitions.

Having made this many appearances this season, it is clear that Brozovic plays a major role in Conte’s current side, who are currently third in the league. Brozovic has missed just two of their 25 league matches, giving a fair idea of his significance within the squad.

Despite playing as a deep-lying playmaker, Brozovic has a total of three goals and five assists under his belt. With his performances on the pitch speaking volumes about his ability, it is no wonder a top club such as Liverpool have taken an interest (h/t Liverpool Echo).

Abundance of quality in Liverpool’s midfield

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are well-stocked in midfield, having as many as seven midfielders in their ranks. A well-drilled and consistent midfield saw Liverpool clinch the European glory last year. Liverpool’s midfield has been pretty the same this year also, helping them to top of the table with a dominant 27 wins from 29 matches in the league.

The side boasts of Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. First-teamregular Fabinho already plays in the deep midfield role – a position that Brozovic also plays, making the Croatian’s chances increasingly limited if a move occurs.

Moreover, with the side also having Milner and skipper Henderson, who have tons of Premier League experience by their side, Liverpool’s interests in Brozovic seem totally unnecessary.

If they want a back-up for Fabinho, they have Henderson, who is capable of playing from a deeper role. The Liverpool skipper has, in the past and present, featured in such a role and impressed.

This season alone, an injury to Fabinho saw Henderson appear 13 times as a defensive midfielder for the Reds. Thus, Liverpool should stop wasting their time pursuing Brozovic.

Verdict

At the moment, midfield does not look like a concern at all for Liverpool. They already enough players with ample talent in the middle that Brozovic just seems surplus to requirements. Liverpool should not waste such money on Brozovic, but rather spend on areas that need improvement.
