Riccardo Piatti started his coaching career in 1988, initially training notable players like Renzo Furlan (reached a career-best ranking of world No. 19), Cristiano Caratti (reached world No. 26), and Omar Camporese (reached world No. 18). He then began coaching Ivan Ljubičić in June 1997, at a time when Ljubičić held a world ranking of No. 954.
