WWE creative got a lot of things right at WrestleMania 36

There were doubts about how WWE creative would deal with WrestleMania 36 behind closed doors.

The biggest show of the year normally drives off the energy from the fans. However, the coronavirus pandemic ensured that this year’s two-day event would be in front of an empty arena.

That didn’t stop the stars from putting on a great show, and some of the matches were fantastic. Most of the results went the right way, but two clashes certainly took the show to another level.

Day 1: The Deadman cometh

AJ Styles might have called The Undertaker out to a match, but the Deadman decided to take things to another level by making this a Boneyard match.

Now the match was not going to take place in the confines of the Performance Center due to the restrictions, and this was a fantastic decision by WWE.

The Undertaker cannot fight long matches in the ring so it made a lot of sense to have a feature match with lots of edits and cuts.

Throw in the work of Styles and the OC, and you knew things would have been great. However, WWE have messed up several times in the past with such matches, but this was excellent, to say the least.

Taker came out in his American Badass persona and that gave this match another different taste. This was Taker stripped out of his supernatural powers as he tried to take on Styles.

The storytelling was great, the pace was near perfect and the ending was just about right too. Styles might have lost the match, but had it not been for his work, this wouldn’t have been the hit it was.

Taker looked good, Styles looked good, Taker won and creative certainly knew what they were doing.

Day 2: Cena goes down memory lane

The second day of WrestleMania 36 saw the Firefly Fun House match between John Cena and Bray Wyatt.

Now, there was no reason to move this away from the ring, but boy, this was another smart move.

What we got was Cena being sent down memory lane right from his first meeting with Vince McMahon (played by a puppet) to him taking on Kurt Angle.

Cena was tormented as he was reminded of his mistakes from the past with Wyatt doing his bit amazingly.

Wyatt and Cena are great at everything they do, and maybe creative let them have a say in how this match went too.

Sure, there wasn’t as much fighting as in the Taker vs Styles match, but seeing what Cena has become over the years was fascinating.

Cena was sent down a hole in the end as Wyatt celebrated a win, and maybe this was the perfect send-off for him.

WWE creative has often been criticised for what they do with storylines, but they got the Otis-Mandy Rose one right too.

Drew McIntyre celebrated the title win over Brock Lesnar while fractures are appearing between Sasha Banks and Bayley.

WrestleMania 36 might not have carried a lot into it, but excellent work all around now makes WWE interesting again.
