2nd seed Cameron Norrie will take on Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the round of 32 of the 2023 Rio Open on Tuesday.
The British star is coming into the tournament after going down to Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the recently-concluded Argentina Open. Norrie has been in good form overall this season. He enjoyed a great United Cup campaign to kickstart the season.
In the ASB Classic, he reached the finals where he lost to French veteran Richard Gasquet. Norrie lost to Jiri Lehecka in the third round of the Australian Open after defeating Luca Van Assche and Constant Lestienne in the first couple of rounds. Norrie is once again expected to have a deep run in the competition. However, he wouldn’t have to bounce back quickly after the loss to Alcaraz on Sunday.
The 21-year-old started the season with a bang as he won two back-to-back Challenger titles in Argentina before making the quarterfinals of another one in Chile. In the Cordoba Open, Manuel Cerundolo defeated top seed Diego Schwartzman in the round of 16 but couldn’t get past Bolivian No. 1 Hugo Dellien in the quarterfinals. Manuel Cerundolo lost to Yannick Hanfmann in the first round of qualifying of the Argentina Open.
Manuel Cerundolo defeated Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida and Nicolas Jarry comprehensively in the first two rounds of qualifying for the Rio Open to advance to the main draw.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have never faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Cameron Norrie to win in straight sets.
