3rd seed Lorenzo Musetti locks horns with Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry in the round of 32 of the 2023 Rio Open on Monday.

The Italian youngster had a fine campaign in the United Cup before he suffered a right shoulder injury that forced him to retire during a crucial tie against Frances Tiafoe. Musetti returned to play in the Australian Open. He lost the first two sets of his first-round clash against Lloyd Harris before making a strong comeback to take the match into the fifth set. The South African tennis pro eventually managed to hold his nerves to defeat Musetti.
Before the Rio Open, Musetti played in the Argentina Open. After receiving a bye into the second round, Musetti defeated Pedro Cachin in a one-sided affair. Musetti’s campaign eventually ended in the quarterfinals as he lost to Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Nicolas Jarry
The Chilean athlete began the year with a first-round exit in a Challenger event in Canberra. Jarry went on to play onto play in the Australian Open. He progressed to the main draw after winning in three rounds of qualifying. In the first round, Jarry produced a stunning performance to defeat 26th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. This was his first win in the main draw of the Australian Open and also the first win at a major in over four years. In the second round, Jarry lost to Ben Shelton. Jarry failed to go beyond the first round of qualifying in the Argentina Open.
In the first round of qualifying of the Rio Open, Jarry made light work of Camilo Ugo Carabelli, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the second round of qualifying, he outplayed Juan Manuel Cerundolo, picking up a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win.
