British No. 1 Cameron Norrie faces home favorite Thiago Monteiro in the round of 16 of the 2023 Rio Open on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old has been in good form this season. He finished runner-up at the ASB Classic and the Argentina Open after losing to Richard Gasquet and Carlos Alcaraz in the respective finals of the two tournaments.

Norrie began his campaign in Rio with a relatively comfortable win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The first set was tight but Norrie persevered. He won the first set 7-5 after recovering from 5-3 down. In the second set, the second seed showed his class and eventually won the match 7-5, 6-1. Norrie had a win percentage of 71 on the first serve that went up to 80 on the second serve.

The Brazilian athlete came into the tournament without a win in the main draw of any competition this year. Before Rio, he played in the Argentina Open where Pedro Cachin got the better of him in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

In the round of 32 of the Rio Open, Monteiro faced Dominic Thiem. The 28-year-old managed to beat Thiem 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). Monteiro converted 2 out of 4 break points and had a win percentage of 75 on the first serve in a match that lasted 2 hours and 46 minutes.

Thiago Monteiro has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Cameron Norrie. The Brazilian star defeated Norrie in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 in the 2020 ASB Classic.
