2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem takes on Brazilian veteran Thiago Monteiro in the round of 32 of the 2023 Rio Open on Monday.

There hasn’t been too much to write home about as far as Thiem’s performances in the season are concerned. Thiem began the season by taking part in the Adelaide International 1. His campaign ended in the first round of qualifying as he lost to Soon-woo Kwon in straight sets. In the Australian Open, Thiem faced 5th seed Andrey Rublev in the first round and lost in a one-sided encounter.
Prior to the Rio Open, Thiem plied his trade in the Argentina Open. In the round of 32, the Austrian star earned his first win of the season when he defeated 7th seed Alex Molcan in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Thiem’s journey in the Argentina Open ended in the following round as he lost to Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Thiago Monteiro
The Brazilian No. 1 played in the United Cup and suffered losses against Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud. Monteiro made it to the main draw of the ASB Classic by winning a couple of qualifying matches against Daniel Altmaier and Ajeet Rai. In the first round, Monteiro lost to the talented Jiri Lehecka. Monteiro’s campaign in the Australian Open ended in the first round as he lost to Constant Lestienne in straight sets. This was followed by another first-round exit in the Cordoba Open where he lost to Federico Coria.
Like Thiem, Monteiro also took part in the Argentina Open. However, the rub of the green didn’t go his way as he lost to Pedro Cachin in straight sets 6-7 (2-7), 4-6 in the first round.
