Rizzoli & Isles Cancellation Unveiled: New TNT Boss Spills the Beans

Published by

Rizzoli & Isles has long been one of the top five series on basic cable, featuring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as co-lead characters.

Kevin Reilly is now leading TNT and favors more daring fare and longer-form narratives in his series of shows, like this one.

TNT’s New Vision

Kevin Reilly has the opportunity to rewrite the rules of television as the new head of Turner’s cable networks, particularly TNT which has suffered recent ratings slippage and is still trying to appeal to younger audiences.

TNT’s new vision is to produce content that “will change the game,” according to Reilly. This includes original movies and series as well as e-commerce solutions designed to bring more value and expand customers’ businesses by transporting documents, parcels and freight across borders, distance, cultures, languages and currencies.

Rizzoli & Isles stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as Boston police officers Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles from Boston PD, inspired by Tess Gerritsen novels. Created for TNT by executive producer Janet Tamaro and nominated for multiple Emmys with three wins so far; Lorraine Bracco, Jordan Bridges, Bruce McGill and Idara Victor co-star as regular cast members.

The seventh and final season of Reilly will premiere this summer with 13 episodes, but showrunner Janet Tamaro has left but will continue as a consultant. While Reilly felt the show has provided plenty of satisfaction over its run, now was an appropriate time for it to move on.

TNT Cancels ‘Rizzoli & Isles’

Rizzoli and Isles revolutionized crime drama television when it debuted in 2010. Starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as partners-in-crime investigating murders around Boston, this show was adapted from Tess Gerritsen’s book series to great critical and commercial acclaim.

TNT President Kevin Reilly recently made an announcement that Rizzoli and Isles will be cancelled once season seven airs later this year in order to revamp its original material portfolio.

TNT will replace its popular detective show The Closer with a remake of Law and Order: SVU and reboot other popular detective series like Law and Order: SVU as well. They may attempt to revamp other popular shows such as NCIS; however, finding enough talent may prove challenging.

Tina Huang played Tina Chang, an experienced criminalist on the show who tragically passed away during its sixth season finale episode. Fans were very distraught over this tragic turn of events.

TNT has not disclosed why they decided to cancel this series, though budgetary concerns could likely play a factor as TNT has reduced original programming in favor of reruns and blockbusters.

TNT Cancels ‘Public Morals’

TNT has fulfilled its pledge to revamp and expand its lineup, but three shows won’t make the cut. Major Crimes and The Librarians will return, while period police drama Public Morals featuring Ed Burns was cancelled as was Sean Bean’s spy series Legends and Agent X which concluded its run this year.

Rizzoli & Isles has become one of TNT’s signature series, boasting strong ratings of nearly four million viewers in its sixth season alone. But this summer will mark its seventh and final season. Starring Angie Harmon as Police Detective Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as Medical Examiner Maura Isles who work together offbeat crime-fighting duo. Jordan Bridges, Lorraine Bracco and Idara Victor round out this impressive cast.

Public Morals was an underwhelming period police drama that debuted with decent ratings but failed to gain momentum over its ten episode run on Universal Television and Steven Bochco Productions. They tried releasing all episodes online over Labor Day weekend in an experiment that didn’t save it; Burns created, directed, starred in, wrote and produced this series about an imperfect Hell’s Kitchen police department in NYC during the 60s whose moral compass is off kilter with itself; Michael Rapaport and Elizabeth Masucci co-starred and it was produced by Universal TV and Steven Bochco Productions.

TNT Cancels ‘Agent X’

Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander will bring closure to their procedural drama this year as it completes its last case since debuting back in 2010. Fans are sure to be heartbroken at its cancellation.

Not every show can become a hit and some have to go. Even though these shows may not do as well in terms of ratings, they still provide plenty of entertainment value and may simply need time to find their niche.

Public Morals and Agent X had great potential but never saw their fullest potential realized. Agent X in particular was intriguing due to Sharon Stone playing the Vice President who discovers an obscure constitutional law which allows her to act on special missions outside federal red tape – it took awhile but once it got going it became both exciting and action-packed!

TNT will keep its stronger shows going, such as The Librarians and Murder in the First. Major Crimes will return for its fifth season. Unfortunately, though, Legends, Public Morals, and Agent X will leave our screens. Though it’s sad to see these shows go, their departure allows room for exciting new programs like Ellen Barkin’s Animal Kingdom to arrive.
