Roger Federer has been cutting down on his tennis schedule
Roger Federer will cut short the clay-court schedule and appear in just one competition, according to his agent.
The record 20-time Grand Slam champion’s only appearance in the clay court this season will be at Roland Garros, which is scheduled to begin from 26 May.
Federer in the past few years has taken time off during the clay-court season and skipped the entire season in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
He returned to action by taking part in two tournaments last year before playing the French Open.
There was speculation that Federer had included the Madrid and Rome Masters in his 2020 schedule. However, it has not been the case and it was made public by his agent Tony Godsick.
“As his schedule states, he plans on playing just Roland Gaross,” sources quoted Godsick as saying.
The 38-year-old Federer has been for some time now cutting down on the number of tournaments a year in a bid to prolong his career.
Federer still confident of winning titles
Meanwhile, Federer, who has gone seven straight Grand Slams without a title is still confident that he can win more.
“Yes, I do believe that. I think by having the year I had last year, also with what I have in my game, how I am playing, I do feel that.”
Federer will be defending his title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship. The tournament commences next week before the BNP Paribas Open in California.
The Miami Masters hard-court tournament will be the last in his schedule before the French Open which kicks off on May 24.
The former World No.1, who has one Roland Garros title to his name, will be well-rested before the clay-court event begins.
