HomeTennisRoger Federer called the ‘Lionel Messi’ of tennis ahead of big rivals

Roger Federer and Lionel Messi are seen as GOAT of their respective sports

Tennis player Richard Gasquet has insisted that ‘Roger Federer is the Greatest of all Time’ and compared the former World No.1 to Argentine and PSG superstar Lionel Messi.

Gasquet said that Federer’s status in tennis is equivalent to that of Lionel Messi in football. Messi is regarded as the best football player of all time. However, Cristiano Ronaldo fans will surely have something to say about this.

Federer is currently injured and has not taken part in any tournament for a few months now. The 40-year-old has also not been at his best for a few years now and has seen the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic dominating the court.

All the three sensations are now tied at 20 Grand Slams each and tennis fans around the world are divided on who is the best tennis star of all time.

However, Gasquet is crystal clear about his choice and insisted that the Swiss can still make a case for being the greatest player of all time in spite of his recent struggles. The 35-year-old told Tennishead:

“This is not about Grand Slam titles, Roger Federer is by far the best. It has no equal in history. He is the Lionel Messi of tennis.”

When will fans see Roger Federer back in action?

The 20-time Grand Slam winner had two knee surgeries in 2020 and was sidelined out of action for more than a year. He returned to action in March earlier this year but injured the knee again and said he needed more surgery to regain full fitness.

Federer took part in Wimbledon but was knocked out in the quarters and since then he has not taken part in any tournament.

Earlier, this month there were rumours that former World No.1 might regain full fitness and will take part in next year’s Australian Open. However, later Federer himself said that he won’t be taking part in next year’s first Grand Slam.
