Roger Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. The Swiss Maestro has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, a record he shares along with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – the most by any ATP Professional.
He rose to fame when he was hardly 17 years old, winning the 1998 Junior Wimbledon. He won his first Grand Slam title, when he was just 21, at the 2003 Wimbledon. In just a year’s time he had already won 4 Grand Slam titles.
The Swiss Maestro was almost unstoppable in the late 2000s, especially at the Wimbledon. No one even came close to defeating the legendary Swiss in the grass court.
The late 2000s also saw the emergence of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, and along with Federer, they were called the ‘Big 4’. Early 2010s saw Nadal and Djokovic dominate men’s tennis, while Federer took a step back.
He was also thwarted a couple of times by Andy Murray. However, Federer found his groove after 2016, and was going good until an injury pegged him back.
He has recovered from the injury he suffered at the 2020 Australian Open, but his game seems to be a bit down these days. 2021 also wasn’t all that great for the Swiss ace. While he did reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, he was knocked out in the fourth round of the French Open.
He didn’t play in the Australian Open and then also missed the US Open due to injury. Federer missed a huge chunk of the end of 2021 while he was recovering from injury.
The Swiss ace also did not participate in the 2022 Australian Open. However, he hoped to make a return sometime in 2022, especially with Wimbledon on the horizon.
Things didn’t turn out as expected as Federer announced that he would retire after the 2022 Laver Cup. In what was an emotional tournament for the ‘Swiss Maestro,’ the world came to a standstill when he was seen sobbing alongside Rafael Nadal after the tourney’s presentation.
Roger Federer Ranking History
Just a year into his debut, Federer broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings. His insane run at the 2001 French Open saw him enter the top 15 of the rankings.
He finished 2002 strongly, getting into the top 10 at the end of the year.
In 2003, Federer won his first Grand Slam title at the 2003 Wimbledon. He was ranked number 3 after his win, and a win was needed in the 2003 Montreal Open to claim the number 1 spot.
However, Federer fell to Andy Roddick in the semi-finals, and hence had to wait for a while, before he could sit at the apex.
2004 was wild for King Roger. He won three Grand Slam Titles and easily claimed the number 1 spot. And since then, there was no looking back. He hardly fell out of the top 5 after that.
And now, despite not featuring at all in the year 2020, except at the Australian Open, Federer was sitting in the top 10 of the world. However, the lack of tennis during the end of 2021 and the start of 2022 affected the Swiss star’s rankings.
By the end of 2022, he announced his retirement. Even after retirement, Roger Federer remains an icon and he is the inspiration for upcoming tennis stars.
Roger Federer Net Worth and Salary
Unsurprisingly, Roger Federer has a net worth of $550 million. A large part of it is attributed to his tennis career and a truckload of endorsements. He is the richest tennis player based on salary and prize money, but his net worth is less than Ion Tiriac’s.
King Roger stood first in the Forbes’ List of Highest-Paid Athletes for the Year 2020, beating the likes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James. He took home around $130 million in winnings.
Due to a severe knee injury, Federer had been sidelined for a large part of 2020. In fact he only featured in the 2020 Australian Open. And hence, 2020 didn’t see The Swiss Maestro earn a lot on court. However, the previous year he took home around $106 million.
Coming to his career earnings, Federer has earned around $130 million, which puts him at number 2 on the list of the all-time earners in the history of the sport. Novak Djokovic is the only one ahead of him, probably due to titles won in the latter half of the 2010s.
Roger Federer Career Titles
Federer has a flabbergasting 103 singles titles to his name. The breakdown – 20 Grand Slam titles, 6 year-end championships, 28 ATP Tour 1000 titles, 24 ATP Tour 500 titles and 25 ATP Tour 250 titles. Federer is tied with Djokovic at Grand Slams with 2nd most titles (20), for most finals (31), and owns the record of 369 wins(27 straight from 2005-06 and 2006-07). Unfortunately, Federer doesn’t have any Olympic title wins to his name.
Federer also owns the record of being the oldest No.1 (36 in 2018). He also owns the record being the no.1 for most consecutive weeks (237 weeks) in ATP history.
With a stunning 103 career titles, The Swiss Maestro is second in the list of tennis professionals with the most single titles in the Open Era. Only Jimmy Connors sits above him.
